This page is still under construction as well. I am looking for one
of those "old railroad buffs" that Connie refers to
her in her letter.
The train station is in a field
between US2 and Winton Road,
just East of Coles corner, easily seen from US2. It appears to still be intact except for the lack of
signs, and of course it is nowhere near any train tracks.
I
also found where Burlington Northern/Santa Fe railroad feels that Winton WA is
located, not sure exactly how accurate this is.
The Winton Train Station used to be a
“FLAG” stop for the Great Northern “Cascadian”. (http://www.gngoat.org/cascadian.htm)
The Cascadian was a ‘local’ train that
traveled across the state on a 10 hour trek from
Seattle to Spokane,
and back. This train ran on the same tracks as the Empire Builder. It began
running in 1929 and was discontinued in1959. Back in those days all you had to
do was to flag down the train and hop aboard after it stopped. I presumed you
bought your ticket from the Conductor. I personally have ridden that train from
Edmonds, and
my Grandfather did in-fact flag the train down for me to get off. I was quite
young and only remember that I got off near
Lake
Wenatchee,
where they had a log cabin on the
North
Shore.
I also remember that he always had a freshly 'squished' penny for me that he
picked up off the tracks, much to my grandmother's dismay, after the train moved
on
